Our first session on April 15th will introduce the world of Greek Tragedy in the 5th century BCE. We will also explore the (probably) most famous Greek Tragedy, Oedipus Tyrannos/Oedipus Rex/Oedipus the King.
Over the course of the year, we will read plays by each of the three great Athenian tragedians: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. In addition to Sophocles’ Oedipus, we hope to cover Aeschylus’ Oresteia, Sophocles’ Antigone and Electra, and Euripides’ Electra, Medea, Hippolytus, Bacchae and Trojan Women.
These are available in Penguin Classics, and if you already have copies of these or other translations they will be fine. However, we recommend an edition that contains all these plays and more - “The Greek Plays” edited by Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm.
