Future Groups

SmUkes - a new ukelele group is being formed, starting 30th October and meeting at St Monica's, Cote Lane every Thursday (except August and Bank Holidays) from 3pm until 4:30pm. We will just play for fun and sing along to well know songs. All are welcome including complete beginners. We will reserve the first half hour for those who are just starting on this musical adventure.

There is no charge and we have a few spare ukuleles of different sizes for novices to try. We stop half way through for a chat and a cup of tea/coffee!

If you are interested, contact Brian or Tricia

Performing Classical Music – the idea is to get together to play classical music for our own enjoyment.  If you are a musician who enjoys playing classical music and is interested in performing in chamber groups or small ensembles, this could be for you.

You don't have to be a top-class player, but you should have some sight reading ability and ideally some experience of playing with others. Instruments: violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon. Possibly piano. Perhaps French horn.

The size of the groups we can form, aspects of leadership and a practise venue will all need to be considered..  We might need a conductor and will also need someone to organise the music we play.

If you are interested, contact Elizabeth Martyn

Meteorology – Gill Godden would like to know if any members are interested in a new group on meteorology. This would be to discuss and learn about UK and world weather, including the science of forecasting, weather folklore and history as well as types of weather and how it occurs. Gill is flexible about where and when to meet, subject to who is interested. She would like this to be an interactive group as she is by no means an expert on the subject but rather a very enthusiastic lover of weather.

Scotland and Scots - a monthly meeting of those interested in discussing matters concerning Scotland and the Scots; current affairs, history, culture, memories, sport, music etc.  Ideal for ex-pats, or those with just an interest and liking for the country and who would like to find out more about it.  Who knows, if there are enough of us, there could be a Burns Supper or Hogmanay celebration in the future.

If you are interested, contact John Litster

Italian for Beginners - There is some interest in starting up a new group in the Knowle area.  We have the offer of some teaching resources, but finding someone with a better grasp of Italian would be helpful.

If you are interested, contact Heather

Live Music Lovers - Would you be interested in joining a new group based in South and central Bristol whose members go to local gigs together?  There is already a similar group based in North-East Bristol and we would like to gauge if there is sufficient interest to start up another one.  Is there anybody out there who would like to lead this group?

If you are interested, contact Heather

Spiritual Self-Care - Crystals are often used in spiritual practices to enhance energy, promote healing, and symbolize various emotions, including love. Tarot cards are used for divination and can offer insights into relationships. Sage is burned in a ritual to cleanse and purify spaces and energies, often used to create a calm and focused environment for spiritual practices. Coffee can be a symbol of warmth, comfort, and social connection.

Sue is interested in a wide range of alternative practices, which she uses to access intuition and to seek advice. She would love to meet up if you have similar interests, whether already practicing or just curious. Thinking of a monthly group, meeting at Page Community Association, to share ideas, and open to suggestions for how it might work.

Soul Funk Band - Al is putting a band together with the aim of having fun and enjoying the buzz of playing with other people.

One idea is to have some level of rotation (eg swap bassists / guitarists on different songs) so this is not just six people enjoying playing but perhaps double that. We could perhaps play some gigs on that basis.

Experience level would be having played gigs at some point. Open mic experience could also be fine, even if not recent. We are particularly looking for a drummer.

Contact Al if you are interested.

These are new groups which are in the pipeline but have not started to meet yet.

They are just waiting for more members or perhaps some help in running them.

If you are interested and would like more information or to join one of these groups, use the links to message the relevant group leader .

If you have an idea for a new group, speak to your Groups Coordinator. There may be many other u3a members with a similar interest. Lots of help is available to help you set up, advertise and run a group. Take a look at the Group Leaders page.
