We are a group of interested people, who get together to explore this fascinating subject, which is literally at 'the bedrock' of our lives.
We meet in December to plan field trips to sites of geological interest in the local area and beyond for the following year and members volunteer to research and lead trips they are interested in. No prior knowledge is needed - just a willingness to learn and get involved.
Bristol and its surrounds is very fortunate to have many nationally significant and famous geological sites to visit.
In the winter we had a couple of indoor meetings (petroleum industry and Avonmouth borehole). We have also been outdoors as usual on trips including to Leigh Court Celestine Mine, Vallis Vale, Cotswold Scarp, and Golden Valley Ochre Mine.
Previously we have enjoyed trips to Barry Island, Kilve/Watchet, Leckhampton Hill in the Cotswolds, Charterhouse lead mines in the Mendip Hills, Hockcliff on the River Severn, Slade Brook tufa dams in the Forest of Dean, Aust, Goblin Combe, the quarries of the Malverns, the spectacular Jurassic cliffs and beach at Llanwit Major in South Wales as well as trips further afield to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset and Dartmoor to examine the granite tors.
